HURRAY- German Government To Supply Electricity To 4 Universities In Nigeria

The Secretary, National Energy Council, Alhaji
Ibrahim Njiddah, said on Tuesday that the German
government had offered to provide electricity to four
universities in Nigeria.
Njiddah told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an
interview in Abuja that the gesture was part of the
council’s Renewable Energy Programme sponsored
by the German government.
He said that 25 megawatts of electricity would be
provided to the selected universities under the
project.
Njiddah listed the University of Ibadan, Modibbo
Adama University of Technology Yola, Usman
Danfodio University, Sokoto and the Federal
University, Otuoke, Bayelsa, as beneficiaries.
He said that the University of Ibadan would be
provided with 10 megawatts of electricity, while
Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola,
Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto, and Federal
University, Otuoke, would get five megawatts each.
“With the support of the German government, we
will deliver power to the selected four universities in
the areas like the laboratory, classroom, hostel and
the medical clinic.”
According to him, the project is to ensure that the
universities function optimally.
Njiddah said the project was purely assistance from
the German government under the Nigerian-German
Energy Partnership to facilitate acquisition of skills as
well as good quality of education.
“It is also in the pursuit of the Federal Government
plan to have uninterrupted power supply, especially
to the higher institutions of learning.
“In addition to that, some few universities are going
to benefit from the renewable energy centres to
enhance capacity building and knowledge transfer.”
Njiddah said that Usman Dan Fodio University,
Sokoto, had an existing renewable centre that would
be boosted through the expansion of its capacity.
“The World Bank is doing something in Usman Dan
Fodio University, Sokoto, and we want to augment
what the bank is doing there.
“The same centre will be established in Modibbo
Adama University of Technology, Yola.
“Already, there is existing student and staff
exchange programme between the university and
some select universities in Germany.”
Dr Jeremy Gaines, Coordinator, Nigerian-German
Energy Partnership, also told NAN in a separate
interview that the project was borne out of the
German government’s plan to assist in developing
educational sector in Nigeria
“We are going to start with the University in Sokoto
because it already had a renewable energy faculty
and we wish to support it by building a pilot plant
that will deliver enough electricity to the institution.
“The idea behind it is to develop skill acquisition in
the schools and platform for training in renewable
energy.
“Already, there is exchange programme between the
university in Yola and some universities in Germany.”

150 Arrested In Kano ForSagged Pants And Sporty Hair

Kano Police Force have begun to
strictly enforce Islamic law. Last
week, over 150 people were
arrested for indecent dressing.

Some people in Nigeria's second
city were picked up "sagging their pants too low," or
"sporting hair styles inspired by
prominent international football
players," a spokesman for Kano's
Sharia Police, Mohammed Yusuf
Yola, noted to the Associated Press. This strict enforcement of the
Sharia law is a part of the
government's discipline method
and curbing immorality.

Other civilians were jailed and fined for
sagging their pants too low; the law sees this act as an influence
of some American hip hop
artists, which is unacceptable. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Kano
state Governor gave this 'anti-
crime' order to the police
department, in his effort to
purge the city of immoral acts
and practices.

The Sharia Police (Hisbah) Director, General Abba
Sufi noted that this patrol or
order will continue in the weeks
ahead. "We have arrested 150 men and
women in the past week,
including prostitutes and their
boyfriends, transvestites,
alcoholics and those engaged in
indecent dressing in contravention of the sharia legal
code," Yola told AFP.

Given that the governor is
viewed as a moderate leader
who has failed to impose the
Sharia rules, some politicians see
this order as his response.

However, Yola, the police spokesman insisted that the
operation was launched "to
reverse disturbing trends in the
city of some five million people
and is targeting people of
various faiths. Those arrested include Muslims and non-Muslims
and we treat them equally
because this is about morality,"
he said.

Some of the arrested civilians
were released after paying fines
ranging from 10,000-15,000
Naira ($60-$70). The spokesman
also added that the people who
could not afford the fine remains in jail . He would not specify how
many people are currently
detained.

I won't be surprise if several
states follow Kano's trend and
impose Sharia laws even on its
Christian minorities. Today, it
targets is immorality. Tomorrow,
who knows? While other terrible crimes like murder, molestation,
theft, or fraud exist, Kano is
more concerned about 'sagging
pants'.

UPDATES: Jonathan Sets Up Panel to Investigate Stella Oduah; Dino Melaye Arrested

Men of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested Dino Melaye following his decision to go ahead with a planned protest over the N255m car scandal involving Minister of Aviation, Mrs Stella Oduah. Dino had led a group of pro-democracy activists on a protest, calling on President Goodluck Jonathan to live up to the expectation of Nigerians and sack the "corrupt" minister from his cabinet.




Anyway, after the arrest of Dino Melaye, President Jonathan immediately swung into action, to show that he is doing something on the fraud. He set up a 3-man high powered team to investigate Stella Oduah.

The three-man panel is to be chaired by the immediate past Head of Service, Sali Bello. Other members are the National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki, and Air Vice Marshal Dik Iruenebere.

Consequently, Stella Oduah was absent at Wednesday's Federal Executive Council meeting in Aso Rock and GURUSLOADED.COM gathered that she is now under security watch.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, confirmed the development while briefing journalists after the weekly FEC meeting.

Mr. Abati said the panel has two weeks to conclude its task and advise President Jonathan appropriately.

Kwara State governor sacks all his commissioners and advisers

Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, this afternoon Wednesday October 23rd sacked all the state commissioners, his special advisers, senior special assistants, and special assistants. He basically dissolved his cabinet.




He then asked all the sacked commissioners to hand over their ministries to their respective permanent secretaries.

ASUU STRIKE: ASUU Demands N1.5tr To End Strike

The Senate on Wednesday said that the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) wants N1.5 trillion to end its ongoing strike.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, released the figure in his contribution on a motion urging the striking lecturers to call off their strike.




The motion sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, and 106 others is entitled: “Appeal to Academic Staff Union of Universities to call off the strike action and return to work.”

Chukwumerije, who read the controversial 2009 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU, said that part of the component of the agreement on funding stipulated that “all regular federal universities shall require the sum of N1.5 trillion for the period 2009 to 2011.

He said that ASUU is insisting that the agreement must be implemented to the latter.

He said the agreement also said that “This money is to be paid in three installments, 2009 – almost N500 billion; 2010 – almost N500 billion and 2011 – almost N506 billion.

Apart from the N1.5 trillion the agreement also stipulated that “each state university shall require N3.6 million” while “a minimum of 26 per cent of the annual budget should be allocated to education.”

According to him, the agreement also said that “education should be put on First Line Charge” while the Education Tax Act should be amended to its original concept as High Education Fund.”

He noted that the agreement said that “Governing Council of Universities should access and effectively utilize from Education Tax Fund funds for research, training and development of academic staff.”

Other components of the agreement included Salary Structure of Academic Staff of Nigerian universities and earned academic staff allowances.

The earned academic staff allowances include: “Post graduate supervision allowances; teaching practice and industrial allowances; honorarium for external moderation of undergraduate and postgraduate examination system, postgraduate study grants; external assessment of readers or professors, call duty and clinical duty and hazard allowance and excess workload allowance.”

SCANDAL: ASUP Officials Beaten By Fed Poly Oko Staff

Anambra state -- All academic and non-academic activities at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, were ceased by Joint Action Committee of Trade Unions (JACTU). It was also recommended by the JACTU to remove the two aides of the rector, Prof Godwin Onu.

The punitive sanctions are imposed following a nasty incident during which the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Oko chapter, officials were assaulted by people from the office of the rector of the educational institution.




In a letter to the rector, Prof. Onu, JACTU declared it would withdraw from further official engagements with the management until the issues are resolved.

The letter read, in part, "Meeting of the Joint Action of Trade Unions (ASUP, NASU, SSANIP) took place on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, as a result of a report on assault and attack on ASUP by officers attached to your office — Mr Amobi Chiamogu and Barr Stanley Okafor, during ASUP emergency congress held on Monday, October 21, 2013.

"Mr Amobi Chiamogu began attack on ASUP officials, destroying official documents of the union in the process, as well as inflicting body injuries to General-Secretary, Lady Barr Ogugua Ochuba. He later rained punches on one Kossy Ebunilo, an academic staff in the meeting. The legal Adviser, Br Stanley Okafor lumbered into the meeting with a stick and eventually caused a commotion.

"Reports indicate that a yet to be confirmed accomplices aided the duo in the act of infamy. The meeting reviewed the situation and concludes the development is strange to an academic environment and public service rules.

"Regrettably, the two officers who assaulted and caused bodily injuries to an officer and members of ASUP are key officers attached to your office. How can such highly placed officers of Rectory Unit throw decorum to the winds? Indeed, the actions are so atrocious that JACTU is worried that these men were sponsored to engage in such heinous acts. Ironically, one of the officers, the legal adviser, Mr Stanley Okafor, is not a member of ASUP. What then brought him to a meeting of intellectuals?

"JACTU condemns the action of the duo in entirety and regrets that the actions are unprecedented in the institution. The actions smack of high level of indiscipline and gangsterism. The development is appalling, shocking and unacceptable. Other personal assistants and legal advisers have successfully operated in the institution without abusing powers or causing a breach a breach of peace.

"In view of the forgoing, management appears to weigh poorly on Labour relations measurement scale. Consequently, JACTU hereby withdraws herself from further official engagements with management until the issues are resolved.

"Regrettably, the victims of the duo are very senior officers of the Polytechnic.

"JACTU, therefore, demands immediate removal of these officers from office. The action is deplorable and JACTU demands that appropriate punitive sanctions be meted to these people. JACTU also demands unreserved public apology by both management and the concerned officers.

"Generally, in view of the unguarded utterances of threats to life by the duo, JACTU is compelled to believe that staff and unions now operate in an atmosphere of fear. That is dreadful enough in an academic environment and this is unacceptable," the letter ended.

SHOCKING: Journalist Found Dead In His Car Along Apapa Road

For reasons yet unknown, THISDAY Foreign and Diplomatic Editor, Mr. Paul Ohia, was yesterday found dead in his official car, a white Kia Optima along Marine Road, Apapa, Lagos.



According to eyewitness reports, the deceased had parked his car for several hours by the side of the road, which aroused the suspicion of passersby, prompting them to move closer to check on him.

The eyewitnesses said the deceased had reclined the driver's seat and lay on it as if he was sleeping, until they opened the car doors to find out that he was motionless and lifeless.

The sympathisers who noticed the THISDAY sticker on the windshield of the car, called the office, informing of the tragic incident.

THISDAY management in turn called the police from Area B Command, who arrived the spot to meet people from the office.

They moved the body to Lagoon Hospital in Apapa where he was confirmed dead.

Although, the hospital said an autopsy would determine the actual cause of death, the medical doctor on duty said the deceased might have died of cardiac arrest.

Until his death, Ohia, was a husband and a father of two boys, was a core humanist who believed in justice and equality

Facebook: Another Rape Case in Nigeria

A 34-year-old man, Omowuyi Kelvin, was arraigned by the Nigerian police in Lagos on Wednesday over alleged rape of a 25-year old girl he met on Facebook.

Kelvin, who was charged before an Isheri Magistrates’ Court, lives at Shangisha, a suburb of Lagos.

He is facing a two-count charge of rape and stealing.




The prosecutor, Insp Nurudeen Thomas, told the court that the accused committed the offences at 8.00p.m., on 15 October at his residence.

“The accused invited his victim all the way from Benin to Lagos.

“On arrival, the accused unlawfully detained her for five days in a room, had carnal knowledge of her and stripped her of N5,000, among other valuables,” he said.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 258 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Section 258 provides for life imprisonment for rape, while Section 285 prescribes three years imprisonment for theft.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

Senior Magistrate Adejumoke Olagbegi-Adelabu granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case till to 27 October for substantive trial.

On 22 July, 2012, Cynthia Osokogwu, a post-graduate student of Nasarawa State University and a clothing retailer was murdered in Lagos by friends she met on Facebook.

They lured her to a hotel in FESTAC Town, drugged and raped her before she was murdered.

It was inconceivable for me last week when I was told by a brother of mine to log on to the gurusloaded to read about 10 people that have died many years ago before they were found and to my surprise on getting to the site I read about the woman that had died for the past 42 years without anyone notice and the day she was found the T.V set is still on, and I asked the brother how come that the tv set has not spoiled since last 42 years and he started looking down(failed to provide necessary answer) and I said definitely the article is a one man write-up not a real life story.

PARIS (AFP) - the new owner of an apartment near
Paris made a shocking discovery last week when he
took possession: the mummified body of the
previous owner which had been hanging for eight
years.

The body was found in the apartment in the Paris
suburb of Bussy-Saint-Georges on Friday, after the
flat was sold at auction following its repossession by
the bank, police and judicial sources said.

The previous owner, a former security guard of
Cambodian origin, appears to have committed
suicide by hanging himself with a sheet.

The man, aged around 40 when he died, had not
been heard from since 2005 when he filed a labour
complaint against his firing.
He had cut ties with his family years before and
neighbours believed he had returned to Cambodia.

His apartment was eventually sold after he failed to
make mortgage payments and to cover building
charges.

A police source said the new owner discovered the
body when he arrived to inspect the apartment and
entered with the aid of a locksmith.

'The body was in perfect condition, as was the
apartment,' the source said.
Investigators were unable to explain why the body
had not decomposed.

Neighbours said they had no inkling of what lay
inside the flat.

'I thought it was an abandoned apartment,' said
Camille, who lives in one of the four-storey building's
20-odd apartments.

Bussy is a commuter suburb, people don't see each
other much, she said.
