This is the 62 year old retired school principal who killed his mother in 2003, dried her remains and stored them in a cupboard in a room that served as his shrine for ten years. He was arrested by the Imo State police last week after a family member discovered the gruesome sight. You can read the story on our page. Photo credit- Vanguard

War against Boko-Haram: Army arrest undercover orange-seller with N600milliom in his account

The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 1 Division Nigerian Army, Kaduna, Major-General Garba Wahab, at the weekend said the media should not eulogize criminals as the Division has arrested a suspected orange seller who spied for terrorists and over N600 million was found in his bank account within three months.
The GOC, whose area of command covers the north-western states, while fielding questions from newsmen in Kaduna relating to why the Army is carrying out general search without discrimination, said, “When we stop those who are hawking and carrying wheelbarrow, and we said we want to check, people will shout, ‘Why are you disturbing the average person?’ And I give you example; we arrested somebody here called mai lemu (orange seller) in Kawo here. And in three months when we checked through his account, over 600 million naira has passed through that man’s account, and he sells orange here by Kawo bridge.
“He is there as a lookout. He is like a spy. He looks around, gets information and feeds these guys, says this is what is happening. That is why I said we are not dealing with idiots. We are dealing with people who have one or two guys working and thinking, and giving them information. And we know that before they attack they must look at the softest locations.”
Wahab added that it is a criminality that the media and society must cooperate and ensure that it is brought to an end.
On Thursday’s attacks in Daura, he explained that military personnel adhered to the principles of rules of engagement, saying, “I called this press conference to fill the gap on the attack that occurred in Daura, Katsina state. We don’t want a situation where people will be speculating. Yes, the criminals came, they bombed vehicles, and they packed money using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to bomb everywhere. Nobody will give an instruction for an innocent life to be lost, so in whatever we do, we keep to the rules of engagement given to us and that is why I have called the media to lend us their support because when a few reports go out, it’s like it is encouraging the criminals and they start to think they have the upper hand.”
Meanwhile, the presidency yesterday offered amnesty to any Boko Haram member who surrenders, as it wages war on the insurgents in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, where state of emergency was declared last Tuesday.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Rueben Abati, revealed this yesterday while talking to Reuters, a foreign news agency, on telephone.
He said: “Mr President has urged Boko Haram members to surrender their arms and embrace the amnesty option which is still open as the committee is working on the option of dialogue for a peaceful resolution.”

SCAM WARNING: Read this message!

DEAR READERS!

Even though I sometimes sent message
to my clients, subscribers and mailing
list warning them about some scams
flowing online, people still fall victims.

I have to write this warning message
because when I got about 3 calls and
a visit to my office last week concerning
some scamming emails received by my clients,
I know that there is trouble in the land.

WARNING SIGNS

1. Any email purported to come from
Liberty Reserve concerning investments,
HYIPs or to receive referral payment is
FAKE. Ask yourself this question, "How
can someone ask you to pay $0.1 or
whatever amount to receive a referral
commission of $400?" It's easier for
him to take his charges and send you
rest. Then, why asking you to pay to
receive when s/he already has substantial
amount of your money as referral commission
as s/he claimed?

These emails are NEVER from Liberty
Reserve. The spammers use a spamming tool
that allows them to use any email ID
of their choice to send out millions
of emails to extracted email IDs.

So, they can just add Liberty Reserve
or any other company email ID as the
sender and broadcast to millions out
there. Be CAREFUL!

2. Run from HYIP investments. Ask yourself
this question, "How can somebody pay you
100% of your investment daily? How does s/he
makes the money?" It's not possible even
the person dey do oil bunkering for Niger
Delta... lol

3. NEVER pay anyone claiming to secure
VISA of any country for you through bank
payment or e-currencies. You must go and
see the person kolokolo and do your research
before parting with your funds.

We have discovered that some scammers do
advertise online about VISA processing fees.
When victims fall mugu, they will give bank
details of exchangers. As soon payment is
effected, they will secure payment details
from you and head straight to exchangers
website to get Liberty Reserve funds.

If investigations are done, you can only
trace funds to exchangers' bank account but
the real culprit is out there. Kpatakpata
everything will go to court and die there.

4. Any email from big multi-national firms
claiming you won something but will have
to pay to claim is FAKE. It's same thing
as in No. 1 above.

5. Any claim that you will make millions
without hard-work (or I call it working
smart) is FAKE. Ask anyone making clean
money online today and he will tell you
it takes some hard-work, smart-work, brainstorming,
patience and full-fledged online business
empire to make money online.

Online business is same as the normal
businesses you see around you. The
only thing is that you have larger
market to tap into when you take it
online.

For example, we are in Port Harcourt,
Nigeria but sell our services/products
to clients in Abuja, Lagos, UK, South
Africa, Turkey, USA, Ghana, etc.

With normal brick and mortar business,
it will not be possible.

6. Buying brand new laptop for N10,000
is FAKE unless it's a multi-level marketing
system. If you receive any email telling
you to send N10,000 for a complete brand
new laptop, please DELETE such message.
It's not possible even in China.

We have receive messages how one guy in
Lagos dupe clients of their hard-earned
money promising to send them brand new
laptop for N10,000 to N15,000.

7. Make Google your companion. Whenever
you have doubts, search about it on
Google. You will see lots inputs from
other victims. That will save you
from the hands of scammers.

BE CAREFUL!

I'm committed to your success,

Pastor Must Offer Sacrifices For Killing Snake – Anambra Community

An altercation has ensued between members of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, and Umuoji community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State over the killing of a snake in the community by the Overseer of the Mercy Throne Assembly, Umuoji, Rev Jude Chubueze.
The community believes Chibueze had desecrated the land by killing the snake, as snake killing in the area is a taboo, and they had gone ahead to seal his church with palm fronds.
The matter has been taken to the Anambra State Police command which is trying to mediate between the two parties to avoid a breakdown of law and order, and assure a peaceful resolution to it.
Reacting on the issue, members of PFN under the aegis of Umuoji Gospel Ministries Fellowship led by Pastor Celestine Ekpunobi, yesterday, described the tradition that forbids the killing of snake as barbaric, adding that such law should only concern the pagans.
Rev Chibueze said a snake stormed his house at night when members of his family were already sleeping. He said he heard his children screaming and rushed there to find a snake where his children had been sleeping.
“When I got to their room, I saw a big snake lying with them and I had to kill it and threw it into the nearby bush. The following day, some community members marched to my house and accused me of killing their god. They beat me up mercilessly.
“They wrote a list of items amounting to N54,890 which they said I should buy to appease their god. Being a Christian, I told them that it is against my faith and more over, I killed a snake and not a human being.”
One of the community leaders, Chief Paul Edekobi said, instead of the pastor doing what he earlier agreed to do with the community by providing the items, he dragged them to Ogidi Police Station where six of the community leaders were arrested.
The Chief threatened that what he did was capable of wiping out his entire family if sacrifices were not made to appease the gods.
“We do not want to destroy his property and that is why we used the palm fronts to tie round the church to stop him from worshipping there for now,” Edekobi said.
But the pastor said: “What they are talking about is not tradition; they see the killing of a snake as a taboo in their world of idol worshipping and not same in Christian faith
“If they do not desist from this act, our next port of call will be the court for the enforcement of our fundamental human rights.”

In anger, the lady took his picture while he was in after-s*x slumber and circulated it on the net. This was the same man that said Adams Oshiomole was drunk driving when he had accident last week.

Guys, Here Are The Things Killing Your Sexual Libido

  • The average Nigerian is a doctor. To get a free
    and unsolicited drug prescription, just
complain of one ailment and the drug referrals
begin to flow like a deluge.
People don̢۪t just prescribe drugs or home
remedies for others, they also â€Å“treat”
    themselves whenever what they consider
    manageable health issues crop up.
Consequently, by the time many people finally
think of seeking professional help, they are
    almost useless...
Perhaps after sleeping pills, the next
commonest drug of abuse is pain relief
    medication. People take over-the-counter-
drugs for the relief of pain in various parts of
the body and also for various health
challenges. Many people are even unaware that
certain pain medications are better suited for
certain ailments and are therefore better
prescribed by a competent professional, who
will also monitor the effects, especially when
such drugs are to be used for extended
period, as in the treatment of chronic pain
    conditions like arthritis, cancer, etc.
It has been revealed that chronic pain relief
drugs — also called non-steroidal anti-
inflammatory drugs — can wreak havoc on the
    body, sometimes with debilitating effects.
Scientists argue that, just like other drugs,
chronic pain medications are not to be trifled
with, even when they appear harmless and
    ‘gentle’ to the stomach.
According to a new study published in the
journal Spine, men who are taking prescription
pain pills in high doses and over long periods of
time are more likely to experience erectile
dysfunction — characterised by the inability
to develop or maintain an erection of the penis
    during s*xual performance.
That was the bombshell delivered by scientists
at Oregon Health & Science University,
Portland Oregon, USA. The lead researcher,
Dr. Richard Deyo, notes that opioids —
medications that relieve pain — are known to
cause changes in testosterone levels, leading
to erectile dysfunction. The researchers had
examined 11,000 men who were taking
prescription opioids for chronic back pain.
They conclude that men who took high-doses
of certain prescription painkillers for longer
than four months were 50 per cent more likely
to require medication to treat erectile
dysfunction than men who were not taking
    painkillers
Another study published in the Pain Physician
    Journal and led by Professor/Academic
Director of Pain Management, Albany Medical
    College, Department of Anesthesiology,
Albany, New York City, Dr. Howard Smith,
enthuses that in the past few decades, the use
of opioids as a long-term treatment for
    chronic pain has increased dramatically.
However, he says, this comes at a price,
especially for men, in terms of hormone
imbalance, with symptoms like reduced libido,
erectile dysfunction, fatigue, hot flashes, and
    depression.
The scientists also note that the symptoms
may include reduced facial and body hair,
anaemia, decreased muscle mass, weight gain,
    infertility, osteopenia (unusually low bone
mineral density) or osteoporosis (weak bones).
Another study by Finnish scientists who
examined more than 1,100 men between 50 and
70 years of age found that erectile
dysfunction was much higher among painkiller
users than among non-users. The study is
published in the May issue of the Journal of
    Urology.
Deyo and his team say their findings add to a
wealth of evidence indicating that long-term
opioid treatment for chronic pain should be
avoided when possible. â€Å“Patients who take
opioids for extended periods often develop a
tolerance to the medicine and can even
experience greater sensitivity to pain over
    time,” Deyo says.
Yet, humans may not be in charge of their pain,
it turns out, as researchers at Harvard
Medical School say as we age, pain and pain
control become an important issue, because
many of the conditions that cause pain
    disproportionately affect people starting at
    about age 65.
They note that several of the conditions that
can prolong or amplify pain, such as insomnia,
become more common with age. â€Å“As age makes
our mental and physical health more tenuous,
our ability to weather the slings and arrows of
    pain diminishes too.
â€Å“All of this puts a premium on effective pain
treatment in older people. But there̢۪s a catch,
    because the most effective painkillers
available have side effects that occur more
often and more severely in older people.”
General practitioner, Dr. Tomi Abegunde, says
in addition to these revelations, the categories
of people that may be affected are those
taking pain relief drugs for long-term chronic
conditions such as high blood pressure,
    depression, anxiety, epilepsy, Parkinson̢۪s
    disease, cancers, arthritis, etc.
Others are those who take drugs that aid the
    production of urine, anti-allergies, muscle
    relaxants, drugs that suppress abnormal
rhythms of the heart, drugs used to treat
duodenal ulcers and prevent their return, etc.
Abegunde notes that the pain relief drugs
usually prescribed for these conditions not
only affect and oftentimes suppress the
central nervous system, they can also cause
serious damage to the blood vessels, resulting
    in permanent erectile dysfunction.
However, he warns that if you notice this
symptom, don̢۪t just discontinue the drug; see
    your doctor immediately.

  • Google launches Hangouts, An Alternative To WhatsApp & BBM for iOS, Android and Chrome

Today at I/O, Google rebranded Hangouts as a new unified, cross-platform messaging system. It lets people text, photo, and group video message across Hangouts’ Android and iOS apps, plus its Gmail and Google+ site integrations. Hangouts rolls out today, replacing Google Talk [GChat] and G+ Messenger. While it doesn’t support SMS yet, it could challenge Facebook Messaging and Apple’s iMessage.

For over a year, whispers from GigaOm, Droid Life and others signaled Google would undertake a big unification of its fragmented messaging offering. Today Google will offer new free iOS and Android Hangout apps, the Google+ integration, and you can upgrade from Google Talk to Hangouts by clicking on your photo in the Gmail chat list. There are currently no plans for other platforms like Windows Phone or Blackberry.

Google’s Vic Gundotra said at I/O today in San Francisco that Technology should get out of the way so you can live, learn, and love. Operating systems and devices shouldn’t matter. You just want to talk with those you care about. That’s the point of the revamped Hangouts. It brings humans and conversations to the forefront.

    Presence, Circles, And Delivery

Let’s take a closer look at the features Hangouts offer.
Presence, or knowing when friends are available to chat, is a big focus. You can see when friends are on Hangouts, if they’re currently typing, and if they’ve seen your messages [also known as read receipts]. Using Google+ Circles, you can select specific friends or a whole group to start a chat with.

Hangouts takes care to deliver your messages to whichever web interface or mobile app your friends are using. If you’re offline, Hangouts will store your messages until you return. Unlike Google Talk, it won’t send you an email every time you get a message while offline. It only pings you by email if someone starts a conversation with you while you’re away. Hangouts won’t send you duplicate notifications on different platforms, and you can snooze notifications all together if you need some quiet time.

The idea is that you can start, stop, and restart a conversation as you move between platforms, and you can chat with friends across the desktop, Android, and iOS devices.
    Text, Emoji, Photos, And Video

Of course you can send simple text messages, but where Hangouts shines is in vivid multi-media communication. To spice up your words, you can add any of 850 hand-drawn emoji. You can send photos in Hangouts, which are saved to a saved to a Google+ album that you and you conversation partners can view, edit, and share later. In fact, you can go back and view your photo and messaging history at any time, or you can turn history off so your dispatches aren’t saved.

The crown jewel of Hangouts is its namesake’s video chat. You can talk face to face with up to 10 friends at once. When you’re in a video chat, you’ll see who is talking in a big window while the rest of your chat partners are shown in tiles below. Friends’ Hangouts will ring when you call them, and they’ll get notified if they miss the digital meetup.

But Hangouts video isn’t just a group FaceTime. Google added a bunch of bells and whistles. You can add visual and sound effects or make use of special Hangouts apps. So if you want to wear a virtual pirate hat or set off some fireworks, you can. You can watch YouTube videos simultaneously with friends while laughing together, and take screenshots to capture moments for later.
    No SMS, Yet

The biggest feature missing from Hangouts is the ability to send and receive SMS messages to and from friends who don’t have a Hangouts app installed. This means Hangouts isn’t truly universal. Several of its competitors allow it, including Apple’s iMessage and Facebook’s Messenger For Android (but not for iOS).

So if you want to pull mom into a Hangout, you might have to send her a standard SMS from your phone and tell her to install the Hangouts app. That could be significant stumbling block. However, Google tells us SMS support is one of the most requested features from Hangouts testers, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it comes in a future update.

Oddly, Google tells us that in some countries, feature phone users, but not smartphone users, can participate in Hangouts via SMS. This should help it reach more people in the developing world, a core area for growth of messaging apps.

Other missing features include voice messages or VoIP, but you could just use a video call without looking at the screen to approximate voice calling. There’s also no Hangouts On Air broadcasting to YouTube yet.
    Why Google Needs Unified Messaging

The messaging space has become a battleground recently with independent messaging apps like WhatsApp and Line competing with Apple, Facebook, and Google to rule private communication. Everyone wants to become the high-tech successor to SMS.

For Google, messaging could create a wealth of engagement and monetization options. Of course Google could monetize Hangouts directly by cramming ads in it somewhere, or selling special effects for video chat and stickers for text.

A stronger, cross-platform chat experience in Gmail could boost time spent there, where Google already shows ads. It could also finally give people a real reason to use Google+.

Most importantly, though, Hangouts could humanize Google. Still viewed as a search and ads company, people don’t think about it first when they want to socialize. Hangouts leverages all of Google’s powerful technology to bring people closer together.

Video: Why Do Nigeria Men Like Big Women?

Photo - Video: Why Do Nigeria Men Like Big Women?
It is often assumed that African men like their women 'large' - not like those skinny Western models on magazine covers - so BattaBox heads out onto the streets of Lagos to ask men if - and why! - their African women "big"...!
"African women are so endowed - both the front and the back!" explains Odunayo, our BattaBox presenter. "So we'll just be asking why they like big women - I hope we'll get honest answers!"
"I like slim women because I can easily twist them... but the big ones are troublesome because they will twist you!" says one guy who tries to toast our Odunayo (can you imagine!)
Of course, there are plenty of other factors in determining your girlfriend, but as any honest man will admit, appearance is the first thing we see...
"I like the big ones!" says one guy, who says he is married. "I love something that can occupy the space!"
"I don't like fat people - because of the smell and odour," says one guy to the shock of BattaBox. This is real life Nigerian Comedy o!
There are a variety of names and terms given to slim or big African women... for example, Orobo is 'big' and Lepa is 'slim'. But our answers include plenty of other phrases like 'robust'!
But what is interesting, is that despite the general assumption that most African men like their women large - seems to be false with a great variety of opinions and tastes.
"I like the slim ones - but not too slim!"
"I'm short now - and short people, we like big things! See that short guy with that big African woman!" says one guy with a big smile. "We like flesh."

Pastor TB Joshua’s Bodyguards Detain Journalists In Ghana

Nigeria’s controversial “miracle man,” Prophet T.B. Joshua, has a lot of influence in Ghana emanating not only from his close association with deceased President John Atta-Mills but also from his ties to some high-ranking members of the New Patriotic Party.

But a recent incident in which Mr. Joshua’s bodyguards detained some journalists in Ghana has revealed the level of influence and power he actually wields in the West African nation.
On May 7, 2013, Mr. Joshua, who is the General Overseer of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), landed in Accra for a special event at the Spintex Road branch of his church.
Media reports indicate that the event was well hyped and that a huge crowd flocked to the venue to see the renowned televangelist. The crush of people created a traffic nightmare on Spintex Road. T.B. Joshua’s program was billed to start at 7 a.m. However, many of his followers started arriving as early as 2 a.m. Since Ghana’s Police Motor and Traffic Unit (MTTU) had not been advised of the event, no preparation was made to contain the situation. Consequently, many motorists were caught up in the horrendous traffic snarl for hours.
The event had also attracted a lot of press attention, but two journalists who went there to cover the resultant traffic chaos were seized by bodyguards ostensibly hired by the church to protect Pastor Joshua. In brash contravention of Ghanaian laws, the bodyguards detained Emmanuel Anteh and his cameraman Gilbert Azu of the Multimedia Group for over two hours. Another group of journalists, Abdul Wahab Giwah and Seth Yeboah, cameramen from Net 2 Television, were also detained for over six hours.
According to Mr. Anteh, the bodyguards approached them as they were filming the crowd and invited them into the church, promising to give them a better spot to film from. But once the cameramen were lured into the church premises, the bodyguards tried to confiscate their equipment. The journalists were then locked up in a room where the reporters from Net 2 TV were already being held.
After several hours, Superintendent Alex Kumankani of the Ghana Police Service intervened and the hostages were released.
The illegal detention of reporters has sparked widespread condemnation from civil society groups and activists. The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) called for an apology from the church, which the church reportedly tendered. A source said the General Overseer even invited the journalists to personally apologize to them, but this development was not confirmed. However, SaharaReporters learnt that the Church hierarchy issued a prompt apology.
Despite the church’s apology, many Ghanaian civil society advocates are wondering how the bodyguards took the license to stop journalists from carrying out their duties. “Did the bodyguards have the right to place journalists under arrest?” asked an Accra-based lawyer. He added, “Were the bodyguards’ actions not tantamount to kidnapping?”
One of the critics told SaharaReporters that she was shocked at the chilling silence maintained by journalists. “Journalists are normally very loud when issues like this occur with politicians, and they readily band together to condemn such infractions when they are committed against one of their own,” she said. Then she added that the same journalists “seem to have no major problems with such a gross impediment to press freedom and abuse of basic human rights. Does it mean that journalists are so afraid of Pastor Joshua’s connections to the high and mighty in Ghana that their tongues are tied?”
In a recent interview with SaharaTV, Fortune Alimi, editor of the Daily Guide newspaper, stated that T.B. Joshua has courted a lot of bad press in Ghana and that he had rendered an apology. Mr. Alimi seemed to suggest that, since Joshua’s church had offered an apology, it should be the end of the matter.
However, some civil society advocates recalled that a huge furor was unleashed by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) when two journalists, Vincent Dzatse of the Ghanaian Times newspaper and Nii Martey Botwe of the Daily Graphic, were allegedly manhandled by members of the security services. The GJA vehemently condemned the conduct of the Ghanaian army. Even after the public relations officer of the Ghanaian Army paid a visit to the offices of the assaulted journalists to render apologies, the editor of the Ghanaian Times, David Agbenu, stated that the apology would not stop the paper from pursuing the matter to its judicious end.
“It is thus quite surprising that, in this case, not much importance seems to be put on a similar infraction of the freedom of the press,” said one of our sources.
Ghana is ranked third in Africa in terms of press freedom, behind Namibia and Cape Verde.

Family Of 3 Escapes Death As Mast Falls On Building

A family of three, a couple and their only daughter, narrowly escaped death, Tuesday night, when a communication mast pulled down by rainstorm landed on their house at Udoka Housing Estate in Awka, Anambra State.

The couple, Mr. Joseph Eze, his wife, Veronica and an unnamed daughter, had gone to bed after dinner when the mast still under construction, fell and hit the roof of their bungalow, destroying the house as well as the walls of nearby buildings and some electric poles.
The collapsed mast. Eze said: “We were sleeping around 10 p.m when the rain started falling with heavy wind and the next thing we heard was a big bang on our building. We ran out of the bed and saw part of the mast resting on our bed.”
His wife, Veronica, regretted that the incident had rendered them homeless, adding: “We have no place now to sleep.”
Residents of the area, who gathered at the scene regretted that despite an earlier advice by authorities of the Anambra State Housing Development Corporation, owners of the mast went ahead to convince higher authorities that the mast would not cause any problem in the area.
The state housing corporation had in a letter dated April 9, 2013, directed the media establishment to dismantle the mast, adding that somehow, the company went on with the job.
The letter, which was signed by Mr. P.E. Ozoekwe, a principal architect and head of development control read: “We write to observe with serious concern that the above property allocated to you as a residential property is now being converted into a commercial complex with a mast under installation.
“The corporation is very much shocked when the development control team on routine inspection, saw that a mast is being installed in the area.
“We plead that you will, by this letter, take appropriate steps to dismantle the part of the mast already installed and ensure that no further installation of the mast takes place at the site.”
Chairman of Udoka Housing Estate phase II residents, Rev. Obiora Nwosu, said yesterday that they knew from inception that the installation of the mast was a health hazard.

Mouth Organ’ Sellers Take Over Highways

Photo - ‘Mouth Organ’ Sellers Take Over HighwaysThe CRV utility car was on a very high
speed. Suddenly, the driver applied the brakes and started reversing the car. When he finally stopped, the driver, who spotted a French suit, alighted from the car, with a carriage suggesting that he was the owner of the automobile.
He beckoned on one of the maize sellers along the Karu/Nyanya Expressway. After some bargaining, he left with five cobs of maize wrapped inside old sheets of newspaper before it was later put inside a polythene bag.
Soon, some other road users came around to buy the same farm produce. While the majority of them preferred the roasted ones, others went for the fresh ones which they would cook with beans.
Indeed, this expressway, like many others in Abuja, have become a mini market where residents go to shop for maize and, at times, fresh and dry fish. Youths cash in on the traffic snarl frequently experienced on the highways to make quick money.
As early as noon each day, young boys come out with their pots, charcoal, dried woods and irons woven into trays, with which they roast the maize. While using makeshift stoves with the woods or charcoal underneath, the iron is placed on the ‘stove’ while the maize cobs are spread on it. The ‘entrepreneur’ uses plastic fans to blow the charcoal, which would help facilitate the quickness with which the fire would come on. Gradually, the maize turns brownish, indicating its readiness for consumption. Its consumers then begin to turn in one after the other for purchase. Some buy and eat it alone while others prefer it with coconut.
Amadu Sule is one of the sellers along the Karu/Nyanya Road. He has been there for about three years. Before venturing into the business, he was a commercial motorcyclist. He says the death of Ibrahim Biu, his bosom friend from Borno State, made him to abandon the job.
Speaking through an interpreter, Sule says, “I came to Abuja to make money. I came with my motorcycle from Borno State. It was Biu and I that came together from our state. We bought the motorcycle from the money we made through farming in our village.
“When we came, we were sleeping at the abattoir in Nyanya until we made a little money and rented a small room at Kado Village, Nasarawa State. But one day, my friend carried a passenger out and was knocked down by a car. We took him to a hospital but he died as a result of the accident. That day, I vowed not to ride the motorcycle anymore. I sold it.”
He has not regretted taken that decision. According to him, apart from having a small farm in his area, he also washes clothes for people in the morning before coming to his “shop.” Through this, he says, he makes ‘small, small money beta pass wetin I dey make when I dey ride machine self.” He is not alone in the business of maize roasting.
His competitor, who simply identifies himself as Dauda, says maize roasting is a good business, but he regrets that security men and officers from the Abuja Environmental Protection Agency usually harass them. On many occasions, he notes, he has lost his “cooking utensils” to the rampaging officers. “But we have no other business apart from this and that is why we will continue to come here, even during the rainy season,” he said.
One of the “supporting workers”, Mohammed Inuwa, who sells coconut, interjected by appealing to our correspondent to ask the government to leave them alone.
“See oga, we are doing our business here on our own. We are not armed robbers and we are not disturbing traffic. We don’t want to go into crime, but the way the government agents are disturbing us is too much. Help us appeal to them to leave us alone,” he says.
Some of the consumers of the maize are however complaining about the quality of some types of the product. Emmanuel Onyema is one of them. Though he testifies to the freshness of maize, he regrets that, at times, it is not well roasted.
Well roasted or not, eaters of this commodity are not losing anything in calories if the submission of Mrs Tonia Osawuyi is anything to go by. Osawuyi, a nutritionist, says maize is a high energy, calorie-rich food. She submits that studies have revealed that it provides 20 per cent of the calories consumed by humans across the world.
She, nevertheless, warns that its proteins are inadequate and that it lacks several amino acids, adding that this could cause malnutrition among its consumers if not eaten with other foods. While advising that corn, as most people call it, must be combined with other foods like beans, she adds that it is a good source of vitamins such as zinc, iron and magnesium.
She explains, “Its high level of insoluble fibre helps to speed the transit of food through the bowels. This is helpful in a number of ways, ranging from the management of constipation to the prevention of various types of bowel and colon cancer.”
Adding that maize’s nutritional value is similar to that of other grains, she notes that the food is at its best when complimented by other foods.
Nutrients from maize notwithstanding, authorities of the Federal Capital Territory may soon swoop on these road side maize sellers and send them packing. Sources at the Abuja Environmental Agency say apart from the unhygienic manner with which the corns are roasted, many of the sellers resort into jacking of cars along the road, especially in the night.
“They are the ones who vandalise cars anytime they are broken down on the highways. Government will soon deal with them,” an official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, says.
But before that is done, the likes of Sule and Dauda can still continue with their ‘mouth organ’ business, as roasted maize is jocularly called. The blowers of the “organ” can also go on with their lovely “instrument.

Teacher Arrested For Fondling 14-Year-Old Pupil

A 24-year-old teacher, Phillip Ebong, was arrested on Wednesday by the Gowon Estate Police Division, Akowonjo, Lagos, for allegedly victimising a 14-year-old pupil (name withheld) and banning her from attending his classes.

Ebong, who teaches Physics and Chemistry at the Dee Jewels International College, Gowon Estate, Egbeda, was arrested during school hours after a complaint was lodged at the police station by Spaces for Change, a non-governmental organisation on youth development, on behalf of the pupil and her guardian, Mrs. Theresa Amaechi.
A copy of the petition made available to PUNCH Metro revealed that Ebong began harassing the victim from the first day of her enrolment in the school in January 2013.
The petition read, “On repeated occasions, Ebong invited the victim to the staff room informing her of his desire to have an intimate relationship with her. Consequently, the victim became a regular visitor to the staff room during break periods.
“On such visits, he made sexual advances to her which often involved kissing and hugging. Several times, Ebong followed her home, waiting at the gate to avoid being seen by her guardian.”
The petition alleged that under much pressure from Ebong, the victim eventually invited the teacher to her guardians’ home while they were away.
Ebong was alleged to have cajoled her to expose her private part, after fondling her breasts and kissing her.
It was said the harassment became too persistent, that the victim allegedly earned the title, “Uncle Phillip’s wife,” among her classmates and friends.
Amaechi told PUNCH Metro, “The victim is a timid girl. I did not know the extent of the harassment she was facing until she opened up to me last Friday. Earlier, she had told me Ebong was asking her for a relationship and I told her to reject his advances. I thought it would stop at that.
“I was shocked when she told me last week that she was no longer interested in staying in the science class; she wanted to switch to the arts and when I asked why, she said it was because Ebong had banned her from his classes.
“Apparently, she had told him that I was aware that he had asked her for a sexual relationship. The revelation angered him. He even went as far as threatening that she would fail her examinations,”
As of the time of Ebong’s arrest, the school principal was said to be busy as the SSS III students were taken the WAEC examination.
However the school proprietor, identified as Mrs. Azubuike, who was alerted to the development, rushed down to the school. She said the victim never made a formal report to the school.
She said, “We don’t condone such acts here. Had we been informed on time, we would have taken appropriate action.”
When confronted, Ebong allegedly denied the accusation. He blamed the entire situation on his interest in his students’ success.
He said, “I am close to all my students; that is what I was taught in the College of Education that a teacher had to be friendly. I just took an interest in the victim because I noticed she was not taking her homework seriously. All this talk of my touching and kissing her, they are all lies. I admit going to her house but it was because I wanted to see her guardian.”
Executive Director of Spaces for Change, Mrs. Victoria Ibezim-Ohaeri, said Amaechi came to her with the case on the same day her ward confided in her.
She said, “We are prepared to seek legal redress in the court should the school and police fail to investigate this matter and exercise full disciplinary action against Ebong.
“Our investigation has also shown that there are other students currently being abused by this same Ebong.
“These acts of misconduct are not only indicative of poor supervision and negligence on the part of the school authorities, but also amount to continuing breeches of the victim’s fundamental human rights.”
As of press time, PUNCH Metro gathered that the police had obtained statements from the victim’s classmates and friends.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Braide, when contacted, said, “I will let you know when I have the full details.”

Hundreds Of Troops Deployed In Adamawa, Borno, Yobe

The Defence Headquarters on Wednesday commenced deployment of troops in the three states under emergency rule, viz. Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

As was learnt from security sources in Abuja that at least 3,600 soldiers would be deployed in the three North-East states from where President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said his government was determined to flush out insurgents.
“With the massive deployment of troops and the determination of the security chiefs to deal with the threat to the unity of the country, the exercise may involve deployment of about 3,600 men of the Armed Forces,” a top security source told one of our correspondents on Wednesday.
Reports on Wednesday said troops had already been sighted at the borders of the states. Also, residents and reporters in Yola, capital of Adamawa State; and Maiduguri, capital of Borno State, reportedly said there had already been an influx of troops and military hardware.
“I have never seen soldiers on the move quite like this before,” a Maiduguri resident, Ahmed Mari, told Reuters.
Sources indicated that the troops would be drawn from several formations, including the 22 Battalion, Ilorin; 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin; 82 Battalion, Jos; 2 Mechanised Division, Ibadan; and 81 Division, Lagos.
Another top security source also confided in one of our correspondents that the Defence Headquarters indeed commenced preparation for the deployment of troops on Monday night, after a series of security meetings between service chiefs and the President.
Jonathan in a national broadcast on Tuesday slammed emergency rule on Borno, Yobe and Adamawa where the President said there had been breakdown of law and order. In fact, the President said insurgents had taken over the northern area of Borno State, home to members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram.
It was during the meetings with security chiefs that the President arrived at the decision to put the affected states under emergency rule.
Investigations revealed that crack operatives of the Armed Forces, especially from the military intelligence, the military police and other areas known for proven capability in interrogation are expected to be moved from Lagos and Abuja and other areas.
Director of Defence Information, Brig.- Gen Chris Olukolade, said that the Armed Forces had swung into action to enforce the declaration of a state of emergency in the three most affected states.
He said in a statement that the operation was being jointly handled by the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police and other security agencies in the country.
However, the DDI was silent on the exact number of troops being deployed to carry out the presidential directive.
Olukolade said, “In furtherance of the Commander-in-Chief’s directive, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police and other security agencies have commenced operations to rid the nation’s border territories of terrorist bases and activities.
“The military operation will focus on tracking down criminal elements within the vicinity of border communities prone to terrorist activities.
“The operations which will involve massive deployment of men and resources aimed at asserting the nation’s territorial integrity and enhancing the security of constituted governmental structures in all territories within Nigeria’s borders.
“The operational plans have also briefed participating troops appropriately on arrests, cordon and search especially directed at apprehending those who have been violating sovereignty of Nigeria through terrorist training for insurgency and related activities.
“The operation is expected to put an end to insurgent activities in these parts of the country.”
He assured that necessary efforts had been made to ensure the safety of civilians and non-combatant elements during the period of the operation and urged the citizens to give the needed cooperation to the security operatives in the area by volunteering information to them.
Jonathan’s aide on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, however, told the BBC, “We’ve had a lot of problems (of) border crime, and criss-crossing of the border by the insurgents, and there’s also evidence that some of the insurgents really are non-Nigerians.
“So there is actually a need to properly police our borders, and part of that exercise will include ensuring that maximum security exists in that place. You see because as long as the terrorists can go in and out unchallenged, then we’re in big trouble.”
While, declaring the state-of-emergency in the states on Tuesday, Jonathans gave the soldiers wide powers to arrest and question suspects.
He said, “The troops and other security agencies involved in these operations have orders to take all necessary action, within the ambit of their rules of engagement, to put an end to the impunity of insurgents and terrorists.
“This will include the authority to arrest and detain suspects, the taking of possession and control of any building or structure used for terrorist purposes, the lockdown of any area of terrorist operation, the conduct of searches, and the apprehension of persons in illegal possession of weapons.”

Nasarawa: 61 riot policemen from Squadron 38 missing

No member of the 61 Mobile Police Force Squadron 38, in Akwanga Nasarawa State, dispatched to dislodge the Ombatse militia group, survived the raid.

This came as the police search and rescue team deployed in Alakyo forest in the state recovered the corpse of an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Momoh, who led the operation.
The team recovered Momoh’s mutilated corpse alongside those of many slain security operatives.
The police and the State Security Service had put the number of their dead or missing officials involved in the last week attack at 56. They comprised 46 police officers and 10 SSS operatives.
Also read: Nasarawa Massacre: Police Detain 10 Suspected Officers
However, a source told on Wednesday that no member of the PMF 38 Squadron known as ‘Tiger Squadron’ mobilised for the operation survived the militia’s attack.
“Apart from the 61 MOPOL officers that were deployed from Akwanga, we have yet to see many others mobilised from the MOPOL base in Lafia, including the men of the State CID. So the claim that only 56 policemen died cannot be true,” an officer confided in our correspondent.
It was learnt that the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, had summoned the officer in charge of the base to the Force Headquarters.
The Police High Command was also said to have begun an investigation into allegation that the Nasarawa State Government paid a huge amount of money to the state Police Command to influence the massive deployment of its officers for the ill-fated operation against the militia group.
Findings indicated that the 2015 race for governorship position in the state informed the operation against the militia group.
Meanwhile, a new Commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu, has taken over from Abayomi Akeremale, who is retiring from the force.
Shehu resumed at the command on Tuesday.
In a related development, the Plateau State Government has confirmed that three indigenes of the state, who were State Security Service operatives, died in the Ombatse attack.
Commissioner for Information, Mr. Yiljap Abraham at the end of State Security Council meeting in Jos on Wednesday, said the remains of one of the victims had been identified.
The identified cop, he said, was buried on Wednesday.
Abraham added, “The council condemns the attack on security agencies and we think it is disastrous to the nation if all we have to do is to target security agencies. Council also condoled with families of the victims and urged the civil populace to work with security agents for the sustenance of peace and security in the country.”
The commissioner noted that the council meeting, chaired by the Deputy Governor, Ignatius Longjan, also reviewed the security situation in Plateau State and expressed delight that the state was not among the states involved in the emergency rule.
The commissioner said, “There are crisis merchants who will want the state included in state of emergency. So residents should remain in the highest state of alert.
“We are trying to sustain the peace we have and the media is critical to this. There are people who are not happy that Plateau is not included and will want such reportage that will tend to inflame tempers in order to justify the need for inclusion of the state in the emergency rule.”

NSCDC Nabs Man For Allegedly Duping Facebook Friend, Rev Father

Men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Ondo State have arrested one Arowolo Femi for duping a girl he met on the Facebook of N850,000 and a Reverend Father.

Arowolo, according to the state Command of the NSCDC, duped the cleric of his Honda Accord 2007 model with number plate CU 730RSH under the pretext that he would help him sell the car.
A statement by the image-maker of the Command, Mr Kayode Balogun in Akure said the suspect was arrested in Akure after duping a girl whom he met on social network.
Balogun said in March 2013, the suspect duped one reverend father (name withheld) of his Honda Accord 2007 model by lying to his younger sister that he would marry her. She then introduced him to the reverend and he prayed for them.
The suspect later told the Reverend Father that he was a car dealer to which the Reverend told him he wanted to sell his Honda Accord car 2007 model. The suspect then collected the car, promising to help him sell it in Lokoja but later ran away with the car in March this year.
Balogun said effort to reach the suspect since then had been futile until he was arrested in Akure.
According to the statement, the suspect was invited to Akure by the girl she met on facebook after they have been friends for a month.
Balogun added that the suspect after meeting the girl passed the night in her house but in the night the suspect checked her phone and found out that she had huge amount of money in her account and pleaded with her to lend him N850,000 to clear some of his goods at the port in Lagos.
When it dawned on the girl that the suspect who came back the second day was about to dupe her she reportedly contacted men of NSCDC who came to invite the suspect for questioning.
The statement said that the state commandant, Alhaji Popoola Waheed Bamidele has advised member of the public to avoid dating people they don’t know on social network.
Bamidele said the rate at which people have been duped on social network recently has been on increase and charged women to be careful with the use of social network.
The commandant said the car recovered from the suspects will be handed over to the Reverend while the N850, 000 he collected from the woman will be recovered.
Bamidele added that the suspect would be charged to court accordingly for prosecution.

“I don’t think there is anything wrong when you use Indian hemp to prepare your food; it gives inspiration and it makes one have sober reflection and that is why I recommend it to my Church members. I use to preach to my members against smoking it but I encourage them to cook their food with hemp. “Some of my members do prepare some delicacies with it, which they serve me. I told them that I was not aware of the hideouts of kidnappers. You see, it was while searching my Church that they saw the Indian hemp. Well, I did not deny ownership of the hemp, it belongs to me; I love it.”
